Dark and erotic, MUSCLE is a psychosexual tale of hidden obsession and explicit desires. Japanese director Hisayasu Sato enters the realm of sadomaochism at the point where pain is no longer pleasurable, where the body can no longer yield to the demands of the mind. Full of starkly photographed and disturbing images, MUSCLE opens with finely-honed, oiled bodies preening and posing under a harsh spotlight. The film`s enigmatic central figure, an editor at a muscle magazine, moves through this world with a stealthy, sometimes jarring, detachment. His sexual tastes take body worship to new extremes by treating the idea of dismemberment both literally and metaphorically.
