Strand Releasing - On Video/DVD -Lan Yu

Lan Yu

Directed by : Stanley Kwan

Hailed by Newsweek and other publications as one of the best films of 2002.

LAN YU is based on the controversial, anonymously published Internet novel “Beijing Story,” which chronicles the turbulent gay relationship between a closeted middle-aged businessman and a young college student amid the violent uprising of Tiananmen Square. Filmed entirely underground on location in China, the much-honored LAN YU was an Official Selection at the Cannes, Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals.

Additionally, the film was selected to be the Opening Night Film of the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival; the Closing Night Film for OUTFEST, Los Angeles’ Lesbian and Gay Film Festival; and the Closing Night Film at New York’s New Festival. LAN YU has also received numerous honors and praise, culminating with five prizes at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, including Audience Favorite and Best Director. On behalf of the film’s triumphant release, the New York Times called it “profound,” the San Francisco Chronicle proclaimed it “sensual,” Time Out New York named it “Pick of the Week” and Film Journal simply said LAN YU is “one of the best gay love stories ever made.”
