Paternal Instinct is a heartfelt documentary about two gay men`s attempt(s) to have a biological child with a surrogate mother. Wen, the surrogate they choose, is a practicing witch, married with a teenage son of her own. The movie follows the lives of these 3 people with seemingly unlimited access, which offers a fascinating glimpse into a situation this straight man could never imagine! But beyond the curiosity aspect, what stayed with me after seeing this film was its humanity and how three people embarked on a journey full of obstacles to create a new life. After everything they go through and all their efforts, it`s impossible to think that their child will not grow up in a loving household. See this film, it will change your perspective on family! This is a documentary that doesn`t seem like a documentary.
I think the brilliance of this film is the ability of Murray Nossel to tell a beautiful story -- a story that will make you cry but is also uplifting and funny. To travel with these two men (plus one witch) on their heartrending many year path to having a baby is a trip into the most private and sacred of one`s life. So many feelings happened to me as I watched -- laughter, sadness, hope, great relief (and a final surprise).
I also loved watching the acceptance and pride of Mark and Eric`s extended families toward this quest for their new family and new life. I think this is a perfect film for every father in every family. Review Submitted by: Tim Saternow
One of the best documentaries I have seen in years. Moving, funny, rewarding, about people with real feelings and concerns.
Film Making at it`s best!

I have seen Paternal Instinct many times now. Ultimately what I love about it is that it is a funny, moving, heartwarming, hopeful and very entertaining film. I think it is also an important film for everybody to see; seeing it expanded my thinking on so many levels. The DVD set has an added feature of an interview with Harry Hay. This is a profound and important interview that is such a contrast to the film, and that will empower gay and straight people alike. Review Submitted by: Paul Browde M.D.
This is an extrordinary and unviversal work of art that needs to be seen! Murray Nossel is a master of cinema verite. One immediately undertands why he is an Academy nominee. Review Submitted by: Jim Jermanok
