Cockettes, The

Directed by : Bill Weber, David Weissman

As the psychadelic San Francisco of the 1960s began evolving into the gay San Francisco of the 1970s, The Cockettes, a flamboyant ensemble of hippies (women, gay men, and babies) decked themselves out in gender-bending drag and tons of glitter for a series of legendary midnight shows at the Palace Theater in North Beach. With titles like "Tinsel Tarts in a Hot Coma" and "Pearls Over Shanghai", these all-singing, all-dancing extravaganzas featured elaborate costumes, rebellious sexuality, and exuberant chaos.

In their 2 1/2 year existence, The Cockettes created 20 shows, and were featured in 4 films. They created a unique burst of cultural experimentation and artistic outrageousness that continues to influence the worlds of theater, music, fashion, gay politics and spirituality, and urban club life.

Every good library, whether it is filled with books or videos, should have some fiction, some sci-fi, some comedy, and some history. For the GLBT community, there is even more relevance to having some gay history. The Cockettes is one "must-have" documentary. This exceptional documentary tells not only the story of a group known as the Cockettes, it documents a time in American history when civil rights, the anti-war movement, hippies, free love and LSD were all common topics of the day. It includes interviews with surviving members of the group, interviews with audience members that packed the house, still photographs and archival film footage beautifully blended to bring to life, and preserve for the future, a story that is as vital to our gay history as the Stonewall riots. This is not a dull dry documentary; while the film is slightly longer than an hour and a half, it moves quickly. It’s a lighthearted film which director David Weissman describes as tremendously fun. While at times, it is almost bittersweet, it’s a touching and sensitive look at a time that was politically, socially, sexually and emotionally one of the most turbulent in America’s history.

Great fun and yet painful movie for me to watch personally. If you lived through that time you`ll enjoy the visit via this movie. If you are too young to have known that decade, see what you missed. I used to be lovers with "Pristine Condition" when he came to Houston. He and his friends would come to Houston, go to the Goodwill store on Harrisburg St., go upstairs and buy luggage - go back downstairs and proceed to fill them up with dresses, furs, etc. It was fun to watch them pick out their "street wear" and their sense of humor was wonderful. I never would move to San Francisco with him but I remember and miss him very much to this day...so tender...and never ask for ANYTHING in return, but love. He used to surprise me by showing up at strange times (in the middle of the night) on my doorstep with flowers and weed. Damn, I miss the 70`s, they made the 60`s look like a church social. Stop reading this and get your ass out and make some friends, life is short sweet heart...make yourself some memories.
