Show Me Love

Directed by : Lukas Moodysson

In a small town called Amal, Elin (Alexandra Dahlstrom) and her high school friends are part of the "in-crowd." Elin is the popular school debutante, and she is the rage with all the boys on campus. Agnes (Rebecca Liljeberg) is not part of the "in-crowd," she is considered an outcast. Young and pretty, but unconcerned of her social status, Agnes is getting ready for a birthday party she doesn`t really want that is being planned by her parents. Nothing much happens in the small town of Amal until Elin accidentally goes to the wrong party and her life takes a new direction. On a dare, Elin kisses Agnes to see if Agnes really is a "lesbian" and her life is transformed. Elin discovers that she has been repressing something that was innately there all the time. This is the story of two girls, Elin and Agnes, who fall in love. Swedish director Lukas Moodyson`s SHOW ME LOVE is a contemporary tale of longing, the joy and pain of being in love, the comical and heartbreaking aspects of growing up and the courage it takes to be different. It is a universal of love and understanding.

*Show Me Love* is about personal courage in the small town atmosphere in Swedish society , but it is also about not hiding from yourself. Agnes and Elin are each disconnected from their peers because of the pshcological and social shells that surround each of them. Agnes is an androgenous person, who is aware of her own sexual identity, but still unhappy because she is alone , but Elin is still in the process of discovering who she is while existing in a crowd of people who bore her. When Agnes and Elin discover each other and acknowledge their love and attraction for each other , they come out of their shells. In some ways ,it is just an innocent film about teenagers in modern Sweden, but in other ways, it is about two young women who grow up through their struggles to find love and the truth about themselves.

This is a great film. It`s sort of a younger version of Better than chocolate in a way and in some ways far more poignent. I wish this were on tv or something so that girls and guys as well at their early teens would possibly come across it and those whom are in similar situations would be able to feel less alone.
