Borstal Boy

Directed by : Peter Sheridan

Borstal Boy - Brendan Behan, a sixteen year-old IRA foot soldier, is going on a bombing mission from Ireland to Liverpool during the second world war. His mission is thwarted when he is apprehended, charged and imprisoned in Borstal, a reform institution for young offenders in East Anglia, England.

At Borstal, Brendan is forced to live face-to-face with those he perceived as "the enemy," a confrontation that reveals a deep inner conflict in the young Brendan and forces a self-examination that is both traumatic and revealing. Events take an unexpected turn and Brendan is thrown into a complete spin. In the emotional vortex, he finally faces up to the truth.

Borstal Boy is directed by Peter Sheridan and produced by his brother, acclaimed Irish director Jim Sheridan. Shawn Hatosy stars as Brendan and Michael York plays Joyce, the stern leader of Borstal.

This film moved me, I`m still thinking about it two weeks after watching it! Lots of weepy-scenes, but it leaves you with a warm feeling. The lead actors put in flawless performances, Hatosy & Dyer make a lovely couple! It`s certainly a rose-tinted view of what a Borstal was, without doubt, but the whole thing is produced, photographed and acted superbly...a `nice-looking` picture. Well done all involved, and thanks!

I`ve cried over and over again when Brendan hears the news that Charlie has died on his ship. It is a pity that a loving, generous and charming person like Charlie had to leave his `china` (Brendan). I believe it was a blessing for Brendan to have known such a friendship.
